Roots

Johnny Calamari is a talented bassist and vocalist, known for his contributions to bluegrass, roots, and Americana music. He was raised in the small Appalachian town of Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, just a stone’s throw from Gettysburg, where his musical journey began at an early age.

Initially, Johnny played the tuba in the school band and sang in various choir ensembles before discovering his true passion: the bass. As a teenager, he transitioned to electric bass and performed with local rock and folk bands alongside his friends.

In 1996, Johnny attended Lee University in Cleveland, Tennessee, where he became more deeply immersed in roots and bluegrass music. Inspired by stories of his grandfather, Carl, who played upright bass in old-time and country swing bands, Johnny decided to pick up the upright bass himself. This instrument became his signature voice, grounding his sound in both tradition and soul. He later pursued further studies in Bluegrass at ETSU in Johnson City, Tennessee.

Over the years, Johnny has gained a reputation for his impeccable timing, strong vocal harmonies, and vibrant stage presence, making him a sought-after performer. As a Nashville recording artist, he has toured and recorded with a wide array of esteemed artists, including Peter Rowan, Dom Flemons, Mike Munford, Dave Eggar, Christopher Henry, Gina Furtado, Thomas Cassell, Matthew Davis, Dangermuffin, and The Wooks.

Johnny continues to explore a wide range of musical projects. His primary focus is on his bluegrass bands, including Ganjamari, FrankCo Penn, Clendenen Brothers, Robert Mabe Band, Josh Crews, and Johnny Calamari & Friends, while also performing with bands such as Roses Are Dead, Kin Selection, Flat Shoals, Julia Galaxy (aka Pharmhands), and Shale Pile Band. In addition, he performs in several duos, including Moser & Calamari Duo, Shale Pile Duo, Skinny and the Squid, and Avey & Calamari, where they play the music of Garcia & Kahn. Across all these projects, Johnny brings his signature blend of strong vocals, upright bass mastery, and heartfelt performance, delighting audiences wherever he plays.
